“What else do you smell on me?” he grated at me through clenched teeth.

I inhaled, unsure of what I was looking for. He was so angry, his hands biting into my flesh. I caught my breath, held captive by the smoldering look in his eyes. And then it hit me, the strong fragrance of a woman’s perfume. It was all over his shirt, much more prevalent than the alcohol. And was that lipstick on his neck? I was overwhelmed with a sudden rage. Without thinking, I slapped Tanner across the face.

“I hate you!” I said in a husky tone, swinging around and going to my room. I felt thoroughly rejected that he’d gone to another woman and was flaunting it in my face. I reminded myself that I really didn’t have that right, that he wasn’t mine, and that he’d gone out of his way to make it clear to me what he expected in a woman. I couldn’t blame him for that. So why was I reacting this way? Why did it feel as if I’d lost something important?
